The DOM radically changed the field of endodontics with its adoption by mainstream practitioners occurred in the 1990s. Providing high magnification and improved illumination it allowed endodontists to visualize minute details inside the tooth. This led to more precise root canal treatments, conservation of tooth structure, and improved success with locating and treating complex anatomy. The DOM also completely revolutionized root-end surgery and led to a rewriting of surgery protocols away from traditional root end surgery practices (which boasted a very poor success rate of about 59%) to modern endodontic microsurgery protocols which rain supreme with a reported literature success rate between 92-94%.
3-D CBCT imaging has become the standard of care in endodontics as it has greatly increased the chances for success while helping mitigate potential complications during treatment. This mode of imaging helps endodontists accurately diagnose complex root anatomy, identify hidden and extra canals, detect fractures in teeth, and plan surgical procedures in an effort to avoid vital anatomical structures in the jaws. These benefits among others have led to improved treatments outcomes and reduced complications.
It is well supported that activating irrigant solutions inside the tooth helps improve cleaning and disinfection within the tooth. There are many ways to accomplish “activating the irrigant solution”, however the research indicates that ultrasonic activation is the most optimal method to date.
At Lincolnton Endodontics we firmly believe in research backed practice methods, hence our utilization of ultrasonic irrigation in every treatment performed.
